Messenger kids contacts gone12/4/2023 We will vigorously fight this action and expect to prevail. The app is specially developed for children who are under 13 with strict parental controls like contact approvals. We have spent vast resources building and implementing an industry-leading privacy program under the terms of our FTC agreement. The statement continued: "FTC Chair Lina Khan's insistence on using any measure - however baseless - to antagonize American business has reached a new low. "Let's be clear about what the FTC is trying to do: usurp the authority of Congress to set industry-wide standards and instead single out one American company while allowing Chinese companies, like TikTok, to operate without constraint on American soil." "Despite three years of continual engagement with the FTC around our agreement, they provided no opportunity to discuss this new, totally unprecedented theory," the spokesperson said. "The company's recklessness has put young users at risk, and Facebook needs to answer for its failures."Ī Meta spokesperson told Insider in a statement that the proposal is "a political stunt." "Facebook has repeatedly violated its privacy promises," said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. It also alleged that Meta shared certain user data with third-party app developers long after it said it would stop in 2018. The agency claimed Meta misled parents about their ability to control who children communicate with through Messenger Kids, as some were able to talk to unapproved contacts through group messages. The proposed changes would slow Meta's ability to release new products until they are confirmed to meet the privacy requirements, while also limiting the company's future ability to use facial recognition technology. The initial 2020 order led to a $5 billion settlement with Facebook and called for an expanded privacy program. The FTC proposed a series of changes to the order on Wednesday after the agency claimed Meta mishandled data collected from the app, including a ban on the company's ability to monetize data collected from its products, including virtual reality, from users under age 18. The Federal Trade Commission said Meta violated a 2020 privacy order by misleading parents and failing to protect children using Facebook's Messenger Kids app. (Parents might also be concerned about their children’s messages being scanned by Facebook for advertising reasons, as Facebook is an advertising company at its core, but Facebook says children’s chats will be off-limits for such purposes.Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. It’s a restrictive system, but one that highlights how tricky it is to give children access to social media, and particularly an app that’s operated by one of the world’s largest (and most controversial) social media firms. Parents can also remove people from a child’s contact list at any time as well. In order to befriend another child in Messenger Kids, a parent must also be friends with that child’s parent on Facebook. That means when a child reports a conversation that they find offensive or block an individual user in the app (or vice versa), the parent is notified on Facebook. Downdetector only reports an incident when the number of problem reports is significantly. It is common for some problems to be reported throughout the day. This chart shows a view of problem reports submitted in the past 24 hours compared to the typical volume of reports by time of day. The control panel for Messenger Kids is located in the main Facebook app. Facebook Messenger outages reported in the last 24 hours. Messenger Kids may be completely separate from Facebook’s other apps, but a lot of the parental management happens through Facebook. Kids can’t delete messages either, so theoretically if a child is using inappropriate language, they wouldn’t be able to erase what they’ve said. To send a 'secret' message, tap the New Message icon on the top-right of the home screen and tap Secret (iOS) or toggle the secret icon to the on position (Android). This, combined with the fact that parents have to approve each of their children’s contacts, should prevent phony accounts from appearing on the platform, a practice that’s become a huge problem for Facebook. A child can’t even create an account on his or her own - a parent must do it for them. The kid or the kid’s parents blocked your child’s account. But most importantly, Facebook is giving parents total control over how their children use the app and with whom they can communicate. If you or your child can’t add another kid as a friend on Messenger Kids, it may be for the following reasons: The kid or the kid’s parent did not accept your child’s friend request.
